There are actually, as everywhere, several different scenes.
You can find by the shore of the river a bunch of pubs with some action, but they are not that "gweilo"-friendly, therefore it is better to head, provided you are a westerner, to other places as follows.
Hotel Bars : the nicest one is probably the Windsor, at the Citic Hotel. Girls are usually nice, if not always very cute (yet a couple of stunners have worked there). They are usually students or have another job, are complete freebies and with a little work over several visits there, may bring you a good GFE. Once in a while you can meet a couple of pros there, but it is not that often.
Another bar is at the 3rd floor of Nanyuan (best hotel in town), where you have almost every night the two same pros (average 5.5). It is not for its bar that Nanyuan is a good spot, but we'll see this later...
Karaokes : Not my scene at all, but I have heard that the one in Citic and the huge one in front of Nanyuan are very good. Make sure to be invited there by a Chinese business acquaintance... or prepare to spend a lot!
Bars : The coolest one is definitely LBB. It is run by a nice canadian guy, and although you won't find any pro, you have quite often some freebies who will enjoy meeting (and extra) with westerners who have a nice attitude and very basic-chinese skills to break the ice. If they are here, they are willing to speak english anyway! LBB is located on Dahe Alley, which is a small street crossing Zhongshan (East) Lu.
It is a good early evening spot.
You can also look for Cheers or Nancy's Thai, but the quality of hostesses/waitresses can vary a lot (from poor to just ok) and all of them are freebies.
Later in the night, you can always head for GG's, in front of East Seaport (Dong Gan in chinese). You can find there from 2 to 6 girls. They have sometimes a very good and friendly attitude, and sometimes they don't, for no apparent reason. Most of them will follow you if you chat with them a little, and they may ask you for money or not. It all depends how much they do fancy you, or how close is their rent to pay! Helen is usually considered as a good pick, but she is often moody.
A new place has opened, named Jack's Place. Heard some good about it but not checked yet. I will let you know.
Discos : 348 on Tien Yi Square. The biggest in town. Full of freebies. You can also try Cowboy.
Massages : the 3rd floor at Nanyuan delivers a 2 hours oil massage including HJ for 280RMB + tip (usually 100 will do). Place is fine and massage skills are great. The 5th floor is famous for its Kiss Massage (don't count less than 1000RMB), but experience is world famous. It does include everything you fancy, and more... Being licked all over, from head to toe by a willing stunner (they ALL are) is usually considered to be an unforgettable experience.
All other nice hotels provide massage (read no-massage and lousy to ok FS) for an average of 600-800RMB. I guess you can find cheaper in less upscale hotels. Most should provide service anyway, and room service is almost always possible.
BBS : apart from the main strip detailed on an earlier post, you can find some almost everywhere. To be noticed, a couple of them right behind the entrance of the new wing in Nanyuan.
